Install Windows Fonts on Linux

Preface

After installing WPS on a Linux system, fonts are not included by default due to copyright issues, even though these fonts are commonly used. Below is a guide on how to add fonts to a Linux system.

Operations

• Since Windows comes with a complete set of fonts, you can copy them from your installed Windows system. First, execute the following command:

mkdir /usr/share/fonts/wps_symbol_fonts/    //Create WPS font directory

Then navigate to the Windows fonts directory, C:/Windows/Fonts/, enter that directory, open a terminal there, and execute the following commands:

cp *.ttf /usr/share/fonts/wps_symbol_fonts/
cp *.TTF /usr/share/fonts/wps_symbol_fonts/
cp *.otf /usr/share/fonts/wps_symbol_fonts/
cp simsun.ttc /usr/share/fonts/wps_symbol_fonts/

Copy the ttf, otf, TTF, and simsun.ttc font files to the newly created wps_symbol_fonts directory under the Linux system.

Note: For ttc files, only copy simsun.ttc (SimSun). Copying all of them will cause system font confusion and prevent WPS from inputting Chinese. You can verify which specific ttc file causes the issue by copying them one by one — if an error occurs, simply delete it.

• Add read and execute permissions, and generate the font cache. Commands:

cd /usr/share/fonts/
chmod 755 wps_symbol_fonts/
cd /usr/share/fonts/wps_symbol_fonts/
chmod 644 *
mkfontscale
mkfontdir
fc-cache          //Update font cache

Note: As long as you follow this method, all Windows fonts can be added to Linux. It is recommended not to place font files directly in the fonts directory; instead, put them in the wps_symbol_fonts subdirectory to avoid conflicts with system fonts, which may also prevent WPS from inputting Chinese.
