Why is Edge/Serverless considered the most suitable development approach for independent developers?
Edge-Serverless? It’s just a shortcut for independent developers to slack off. The domestic environment adds more hassle—Vercel and Cloudflare work seamlessly abroad, but in China, you’re left to handle everything yourself? Node.js full-stack frameworks adapt quite well, but who isn’t fed up with all this trouble?

Foreword
When people hear "Edge," many think of the browser. But here, Edge refers to Edge Computing, combined with Serverless. For independent developers, this is a technological trend worth paying close attention to.
I remember introducing Serverless and Edge Computing a few years ago during an internal presentation.
However, it wasn't until this year that I truly started using Serverless.
The biggest factor is still the environment.
Due to strict regulations in China, everything requires registration (备案), making it difficult for low-cost site-building methods like Serverless to take off.
In the mainstream technology stack of independent developers worldwide, Vercel and Cloudflare are familiar names. Cloudflare, in particular, is known as the Cyber Bodhisattva (赛博菩萨), allowing developers to focus on functionality development without the need to spend effort on server maintenance, security protection, and other tasks, enabling users around the world to access services at a very low cost.
The mainstream Edge platforms are primarily based on the Node.js technology stack, which is why full-stack frameworks like Next.js have become the first choice for independent developers.
Of course, there are also backend frameworks designed specifically for Edge environments, like hono.
I'm still exploring this area. I'll share more once the first product based on the Edge environment is launched~
Pain Points of Indie Developers
If you're an individual developer, you've likely encountered these hassles:
- Renting and configuring your own VPS environment.
- Dealing with security attacks, data backups, and certificate renewals all by yourself.
- Just wanting to launch a product, but getting forced into a side gig as a systems operator.
These "hidden costs" actually hit indie developers hard. Time and energy should be spent on the product and users, not on servers.
The Value of Edge/Serverless
This is exactly where the significance of Serverless + Edge lies:
- Serverless: No operational maintenance, pay-per-use billing, you only pay for what you use.
- Edge: Run code on the nearest node to the user, enabling fast access speeds worldwide.
By combining the two, independent developers can:
- Launch products at a lower cost.
- Validate ideas more quickly.
- Spend less effort on tasks like "setting up servers."
Differences Between Overseas and Domestic Environments
Overseas, Vercel and Cloudflare have become the most commonly used tools for independent developers. Cloudflare is even humorously referred to as the "Cyber Buddha," as it handles most of the heavy lifting of infrastructure, allowing you to focus on your business logic.
Domestically, due to registration and regulatory requirements, the Serverless experience is not as seamless as overseas. Although products like Alibaba Cloud Function Compute and Tencent Cloud Function are making efforts, there is still a gap in the overall ecosystem and Developer Experience (DX).
Changes in the Technology Ecosystem
Edge platforms generally use the Node.js Runtime, so full-stack frameworks like Next.js are naturally suited for them.
If you find Next.js too heavy, you might also consider lightweight backend frameworks specifically designed for Edge/Serverless, such as Hono.
Support for Python and Go in Edge scenarios is currently limited but is gradually developing.
Opportunities for Independent Developers
For individuals, this means:
- Costs are extremely low, even affordable for students or freelancers.
- The speed of product launch is greatly accelerated; sometimes it only takes a few minutes to become "globally available."
- It is suitable for rapid trial and error, and the cost of failure is minimal.
Thinking and Outlook
Of course, Edge/Serverless cannot solve all problems. Complex business applications or those with extremely high performance requirements may still require traditional servers. But it is undeniable that it is giving independent developers more opportunities to compete on a level playing field with large companies.
Just like myself, I am currently exploring my first product based on the Edge environment. Once it goes live, I will write another article titled "Practical Experience Sharing". 😄
